Ald. JoAnn Thompson, known for her efforts to bring a Whole Foods and an annual music festival to Englewood, died Monday night of heart failure about two weeks after an operation, her chief of staff said Tuesday.
Thompson, 16th, was locked in a re-election fight against fellow Ald. Toni Foulkes and three other candidates. Foulkes decided to take on her colleague after a City Council remap gave the edge to a Latino candidate in her current 15th Ward.
